STEPPS to transformation - Part 2

We live in complex times and healthcare is a complex system. Any changes that we implement must be adaptable to the needs of our patients and organizations if we want them to stick. The TeamSTEPPS CanadaTM FUNdamentals mini-workshop (TSC) provides leaders with an engaging, evidence-based, adaptable experience to improve the overall function of organizational teamwork while keeping focus on the patient and their experiences. TSC was jointly developed by the Canadian Patient Safety Institute and the Health Quality Council of Alberta (HQCA) as a "made in Canada" adaptation of the TeamSTEPPS® program born out of the US for improving team function and resulting in enhanced patient safety and experience. As a result of this collaboration, HQCA is the only TSC regional training centre in Canada. TSC has a plethora of evidence backing up efficacy, but most impressively, all of the concepts discussed in TSC are easily adapted to any workplace including leadership, front line care delivery, administration, and patient/family advocacy. An example of this is when a team leader who participated in TSC training shared that their team adapted SBAR (a mnemonic that stands for Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendations - traditionally used for patient handover) as a standardized way to communicate through email within their organization. The overall objectives for the workshop are:  


  • Introduce the concepts of teamwork and TSC to the participants 

  • Identify the importance of communication, leadership, situation monitoring, and communication on teamwork 

  • Provide experiences that can be used to improve teamwork in any organization 

  • Discuss practical ways for leaders to adapt the information within their organizations  


Using a gaming approach, participants are fully engaged in the main concepts of TSC: communication, leadership, mutual support, and situation monitoring. The workshop is highly interactive and activities help leaders recognize that they may be unaware of the hidden factors that impact teamwork and how crucial it is to uncover these and address them. Leaders will be given instructions for each game, so they may use them within their organization. The TSC program comes with tools to measure organizational readiness, and team attitudes and perceptions. These tools have been proven useful for leaders measuring the success of implementing TSC methodology in their organization. Aside from these tools, we provide resources for quality improvement measures such as outcome, process, and balancing measures and how these can be used in specific organizations to implement TSC concepts.
