The National Health Leadership Conference (NHLC) is the largest national gathering of health system leaders in Canada and provides a forum for questions, debate and the sharing of strategies and solutions to the most pressing health system challenges. This year’s theme, Creating the Winning Conditions for Change, will examine key issues related to policy, engagement, governance, technology and digital health, and the social determinants of health.
The Travel Award is an opportunity for a patient to attend the 2018 NHLC and then return to their communities to share what they have learned. It is also hoped that the scholarship recipient will be motivated to take on advancing leadership roles and increase their advocacy opportunities and efforts.
The scholarship, in the amount of $1500, will be used to offset travel/accommodation expenses associated with attending the conference. Eligibility and criteria for this scholarship is as follows:
• Applicants must not be affiliated with government, a healthcare provider or business, or hold a paid position.
• Applicants will need to provide, in a letter:
(a) the benefits they anticipate from attending the conference
(b) how their attendance will increase their participation in future advocacy or leadership activities on behalf of patients
(c) current patient advocacy experience and activities.
• By applying for and accepting a scholarship, the recipients agrees to:
(a) attend the entire 2018 NHLC, which begins at 7:00 am on Monday, June 4 and ends at 4:30 pm on Tuesday, June 5. The conference program and other important details for the conference can be accessed by visiting the NHLC website.
(b) communicate throughout the conference via social media (twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.)
(c) provide a 100-word testimonial via email that summarizes your overall experience and the benefits you gained from attending the conference as well as opportunities to improve the conference from a patient perspective. The testimonial or a portion thereof may be posted on NHLC’s website.
The scholarship will be made payable to the individual recipient in advance of the conference.

NHLC’s Program Committee will review all applications based on the eligibility and criteria indicated above. The successful applicant will be notified by 5:00 PM Eastern on Monday, May 28, 2018.
